Second Trip to Tokyo and Kyoto: Where to Go Instead of the Classics
Ask an AI for a Tokyo and Kyoto itinerary and it sends you back to Tsukiji and Nishiki. Swap each first-trip stop for a quieter neighborhood instead.
Quick answer
- Swap each first-trip stop for a quieter neighborhood instead of asking for hidden gems
- Plan two nearby areas a day with at most one train hop between them
- Save your already-visited list once so every new chat starts with it

Your second trip to Japan starts the same way as your first. You ask three different AI tools for a Tokyo and Kyoto itinerary, and all three hand back Tsukiji, Shibuya Sky and Nishiki Market. You did those in 2023.
Telling the chat "no touristy spots" works for about one reply. The next day, in a new thread, it has forgotten.

Swap, don't skip
The easiest fix is a one-to-one swap. For each first-trip stop, pick a neighborhood with the same feel and fewer crowds.
| Skip on trip two | Go instead | Nearest station |
|---|---|---|
| Tsukiji Outer Market | Yanaka and Nezu backstreets | Sendagi or Nezu |
| Shibuya Sky | Daikanyama to Nakameguro canal walk | Daikanyama |
| Nishiki Market | Demachi Masugata shopping street | Demachiyanagi |
| Arashiyama bamboo grove | Daitoku-ji sub-temples | Kitaoji |
Three rules that save a second trip
Two areas a day, one train hop. The Tokyo subway map looks small, but transfers at big stations like Otemachi or Shinjuku can take 10 to 15 minutes, and more at rush hour or if you get lost. Yanaka in the morning and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa in the afternoon works. Yanaka and Ebisu on the same day does not.
Go easy on Kyoto's buses. Kyoto's tourist bus routes are often crowded and slow through the middle of the day. Use the Keihan line and the subway where you can, then walk clusters like Daitoku-ji or Okazaki.
Write the skip list down once. This is the part chats are bad at, so it is worth ten minutes.

One list for every chat
You ask: Plan five days in Tokyo and Kyoto for me.
AI with no memory of trip one: Day 1: Tsukiji Outer Market, then Shibuya Sky at sunset. Day 3: Nishiki Market for lunch.
AI with your skip list: You did Tsukiji, Shibuya Sky and Nishiki in 2023, so day 1 is Yanaka and Nezu, then Kiyosumi-Shirakawa. One train hop a day, and Kyoto stays on the Keihan and subway lines.
Keep one list of what you have done and what you hated, and paste it at the top of any trip chat. A Knot project can hold that list so every AI you use reads the same one, but a pinned note on your phone works too.

The 5 rules in the starter checklist
- 2026 Repeat-Visitor Exclusion Rule: Zero Repeat Corridors. 2026 Governing Rule: Strictly exclude Tsukiji Outer Market, Shibuya Sky, teamLab, Senso-ji main Nakamise strip, Arashiyama main grove, and Nishiki Market (completed in 2023; high crowd friction). Route mornings through Yanaka/Nezu, Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, Daikanyama/Nakameguro, and Demachi Masugata / Daitoku-ji sub-temples.
- Daily Transit Ceiling: Two Adjacent Wards Maximum. Never schedule more than two adjacent Tokyo wards or Kyoto districts per calendar day, and cap train hops between morning and evening areas at one hop of about 25 minutes or less.
- Shinkansen Oversized Baggage vs Yamato Takkyubin Forwarding. If your bags total more than 160 cm (length plus width plus height), you need a reserved Shinkansen seat with an oversized baggage area (160 to 250 cm; over 250 cm is not allowed), or you can forward them. Yamato Takkyubin accepts bags up to its size 160 limit (25 kg), so send bags at or under 160 cm a day ahead and travel between cities with a daypack.
- Dining Ratio: One Anchored Counter Booking Per Day Maximum. Book at most one fixed-time counter dinner per day (via TableCheck, Omakase.in or the restaurant itself, often 1 to 3 months out depending on the restaurant) and keep lunch unscheduled within the active morning neighborhood to prevent cross-town clock-watching.
- Kyoto Transit Rule: Rail and Walk First. In Kyoto, route mainly via the Keihan Main Line, Hankyu Kyoto Line, the Karasuma and Tozai subways, or short taxi hops. Avoid Kyoto City Bus routes 100 and 206 between 09:00 and 18:00 where possible, as they are often crowded and slow.

Check my Knot project 'Tokyo & Kyoto Repeat-Trip Routing Ledger' for my visited-spot exclusion list, neighborhood clustering rules, and replaced first-trip assumptions. Then build a 3-day Tokyo + 2-day Kyoto architecture and coffee itinerary that strictly respects my 2-neighborhood-per-day cap and zero-repeat rules.Frequently asked questions
Why do ChatGPT and Claude keep recommending Tsukiji and Senso-ji even when I ask for hidden gems?
Chat tools tend to repeat the most widely written-about places, so even a 'hidden gems' request can bring back the classics unless your prompt names the places you have already visited and asks the AI to exclude them.
What is the best alternative to Nishiki Market in Kyoto for a second visit?
Demachi Masugata Shotengai, a short walk from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station near where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet, is a local covered shopping street with fresh mochi at Demachi Futaba, pickles and fishmongers. It is much quieter than Nishiki, though Futaba often has a queue.
How do I avoid Kyoto bus gridlock on a second trip?
Avoid Kyoto City Bus tourist routes such as 100 and 206 between 09:00 and 18:00 if you can. They are often crowded and slow. Build your day along the Keihan Main Line (Tofuku-ji to Demachiyanagi), the Karasuma and Tozai subway lines, and short walkable clusters around Daitoku-ji or Okazaki.
